The article in this issue is part of The 2023 edition, which is the annual Follow The Leader series by Entrepreneur Middle East. In the series, enterprise leaders from the Middle East discuss strategy, industry-specific strategies, and challenges they face as they guide their businesses to success.

Dr. Hamid Haqparwar, an automotive professional with vast international experience, was appointed Managing Director of the Middle East for the BMW Group in 2018. The BMW Group is one of the leading premium automobile and motorcycle manufacturers around the world. Haqparwar’s current role follows an interesting career path that began at the BMW Group headquarters in Germany and continued with several senior management positions at the company.

It is his experiences with the BMW Group that have shaped his views on leadership. If we all take these to heart, it will be worth the effort in our business endeavors. Dr. Haqparwar explains that “leadership involves rolling up your sleeves and actively participating in the daily tasks with your teammates.” By doing this, you gain their respect and establish a solid foundation of trust. It means demonstrating the values that you teach and want to instill in your team. It would be best if you verified your deals, whether they are integrity, accountability, or a strong work ethic.

Last but not least, let everyone know that you do not have the right to be above others in the team. You must arrive on time if you want to see your section. It is important to respect your unit’s deadlines before you can expect them to do so. This will create a culture of accountability and fairness within the group.

The best leaders are the ones who live their words. Dr. Haqparwar strives to do this every day. Dr. Haqparwar says that leaders must be the ones to lead their teams from the front. This is the approach I have always used in my leadership journey.

The Executive Summary: Hamid Haqparwar shares what he believes to be the most important thing he’s learned about leadership.

The biggest lesson that I have learned is the importance of being calm and composed as a leader. Your calmness and composure will be crucial in the many challenges and uncertainties that you face throughout your career. It is your duty as a leader to lead your team in difficult situations. Your ability to remain calm and composed shows resilience and resourcefulness. This inspires your team to tackle challenges with a levelheaded mindset.

Your team is looking for stability and trust from you, whether they realize it or not. It is important to remember, in times of crisis, that there are solutions for every problem. You have to help your team find these solutions. You can avoid spreading panic and uncertainty to your squad by remaining calm. A steady presence encourages them to think clearly and resolve the problem.

You can also maintain a clear strategic perspective by remaining calm. This prevents knee-jerk reactions and hasty decisions, which can complicate matters. Top executives who are able to keep composure set the tone for resilience and problem-solving, as well as success when faced with adversity.

Lexus covered 56 percent of the market with seven major cities at the start of last year. In addition to the eight service centers, Meraki has opened one in Coimbatore, one in Gurgaon, and another in Pune. By the end of this year, we plan to have a market share of 85-86 percent. We have also launched Lexus Virtual Dome, an online touchpoint that allows our guests to experience Lexus virtually. We plan to open up more service points to reach around 90% of the luxury vehicle market wherever Lexus is located.
